Background on Lineage of Ordnance Companies

Source:  Mr. Bernie Shearon & Mr. Mark Boland

Re.: Evolution of a segment of the Ordnance Supply & Maintenance Companies, Aviation numbered from about 1601 to about 1725. Although there are gaps in most units' information, the following sequence appears to have occurred.

Starting on or about 10 Apr 42, the AAF formed Quartermaster Platoons, Light Maintenance (Aviation), intending to assign them to the Air Base Groups (it is not clear if they were assigned before the Air Base Groups became Service Groups). These platoons were numbered starting at about 601. Platoons numbered 604, 606-687, 689-727 were activated by July 42. There may not have been a 601-603. The first units activated in the US starting at 624, and the units numbered lower than that were all established overseas. Possibly the 605th was to have been in the Philippines.

When Air Base Groups redesignated as Service Groups (in the US on 13 Jun 42), there was a general revision in the designation of subordinate units as well. In this case, the Quartermaster Platoons were expanded and redesignated Quartermaster Compaines (Medium Maintenance), Aviation. The nominal date for this redesignation in the US was 2 Jul 42, but some of these units were already overseas in the Pacific, and may have delayed redesignating.

About September 1942, these companies converted to the Ordnance branch and became Ordnance Companies (Medium Maintenance), Aviation (Q). At the same time they added 1000 to their numerical designation. (I cannot prove this for all such organizations, but research confirms it is probable for nearly every unit). The (Q) in the designation indicated they were former Quartermaster units. I have not been able to confirm that this was official, but it appears on lists.

At the end of 1942, most (but not all) of these units were redesignated as Ordnance Supply & Maintenance Companies, Aviation. Some remained medium maintenance units (but changed from Ordnance Co (Med Maint) to Ordnance Med Maint Co) and some of these returned to platoon size as Ordnance Automotive Maintenance Platoons.

"Our outfit, 3479th Ord. MAM Co., consisting of 110 men was formed at Camp Atterbury, Ind., in the fall of 1942. We left the States July 31, 1943, and landed in Karachi 53 days later. We were stationed at the wharf at Karachi for 19 months. We took the trucks off the ships and got them in running shape, and then shipped them around India to Calcutta to be used on the Burma and China Road. We also kept all the trucks in good running order for Malir Air Base. Later we drove our trucks and equipment all the way across India to Burma. The 3,500 miles took us 38 days. During the remainder of the conflict we operated maintenance shops along the China road. We had units at Gappa, Lashio, Yungping and Paoshan (headquarters)."  -- Mr. John E. Cox, Fort Dodge, Iowa
